About Us

Obsessively passionate about fishing
I started this company because I wanted to find a way to help persevere salmon strongholds for conservation. I like to fish and make spinners, so the founding principle at Craig's Custom Lures is to donate the first dollar of every order to one of three reputable fishery conservation associations. The one's I chose are the ones that I am most familiar with, The Association of Northwest Steelheaders, Wild Salmon Center, and Trout Unlimited. We do this because we believe in leaving the world a better place than we found it. These organizations are worth your consideration for additional support...

Why salmon and steelhead strike spinners

Learning from others
Salmon and steelhead are interestingly prone to spinning lure for a variety of reasons. I am no expert, just someone who tries and pays attention and learns from others. I have listened to and seen first hand that they strike spinners hard. No real hook set required. Why is that? I listened to a lecturer speak recently at a local chapter meeting of the NW Steelheaders that commented that salmon and steelhead are unlike most fish, that they are not feeding while in the tributaries. It makes sense, they are there for spawning purposes. The lures then are in their way, and they hit it for the same reason they hit eggs, or beads, because they don't have hands! They are aggressively protecting their habitat for spawning. This got me thinking, where are there not many egg roe instigators on spinning lures? So I found some bright salmon and steelhead roe colored beads and began experimenting with lure combinations. Turns out, having a roe colored egg bead on a lure is pretty effective for salmon and steelhead strikes. These are not the best lures in the world, I don't claim them to be, but there was a significant amount of thought put into the design. Chrome on.
